How to use Logic Pro X with Apogee Duet and Waves Plugins
In this tutorial we will show you how to set up Apogee Duet with Logic X and use the Waves plugins included with Duet.
To follow this tutorial, you need to have Duet 2 or Duet for iPad & Mac installed along with the Apogee Maestro software. And the latest version of Logic X.
Open Logic and create a new session.
Select “Guitar or Bass” as we will be recording an electric guitar for the purpose of this tutorial.
Click on “Details”.
Click on the arrow next to “Input Device.
A new Window will appear.
For “Output Device” select “Duet USB″.
“Input Device” should automatically change to “Duet USB” as well.
For now set the buffer to 64.
For best latency you can set the buffer lower, but you may need to adjust the buffer higher depending on the size of the project you are working on.
Click on Apply Changes.
Under the “General” tab make sure that “Software Monitoring” is selected.
Back in “Devices” and close the preferences window.
Under “Input” You will want to select either Input 1 or 2 depending on which of Duet’s 1/4” inputs you connected your guitar to.
Click on create and you will now see a new track.
Now Click on “Mix” and select “Open Apogee control panel”.
On the Input tab you will see two channels. On the channel you connected your guitar to, select “Instrument”.
Make sure “Input Monitoring” is selected.
Duet can control input and output level with a single knob.
The four icons on the top panel indicate which input or output source you have selected.
We have ” instrument” selected, so you will see the guitar icon is lit.
Plug in your headphones or speakers.
Now Adjust your input and output level so that you are getting a good solid signal without clipping.
In the “Library” you can choose between different Pre-set guitar sounds.
However, if you really want to customize your sound, Make sure the “Inspector” window is open.
Click on the “Amp” plug in and You can change Amps in “Amp Designer” or Add effect pedals in “Pedal board”.
For further sound customization, you can add or remove any of the included Logic plug ins, or add any of the Waves plug ins that come with Duet.
If you want to build a guitar tone from scratch simply choose “Reset channel strip”.
Add your favorite amps… pedals… or any other plug in.
Now just Customize your guitar tone and Record!
If you want to connect a microphone to Duet and record vocals or an acoustic instrument.
Click on the “plus” button to add a new track.
Choose “Audio” which will create a new track with no Pre-sets or effects.
Under “Input” You will want to select either Input 1 or 2 depending on which of Duet’s XLR inputs you connected your microphone to.
In Maestro change source to “Mic” if you are using a Dynamic or Ribbon microphone.
If you are using a condenser microphone, you will also need to click on the “48” button to turn phantom power on.
If you are using an external Mic Pre Amp in front of Duet choose either +4 or -10 depending on the output of your external pre amp.
Just like with the guitar track we recorded earlier, you can add Logic or third party plug ins. Either before or after you record your track.
Now adjust levels, and Record!
