Apogee and UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability
Apogee is a proud partner of UCLA’s Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES). UCLA’s IoES is a national leader in environmental education and research. The IoES has nearly 100 faculty (over 35 on climate related research alone) in all disciplines working together on solving environmental problems and training the upcoming generation of environmental leaders. Apogee has long believed education and research that leads to action is the only real chance we have in solving the many environmental issues we face globally.
Apogee fully supports UCLA’s belief that Los Angeles should be a global leader in sustainability. The IoES will provide the research and policy recommendations that enable the city to reach transformational goals of 100% renewable energy, 100% local water supply, and no further loss of local biodiversity by 2050.

Not So Fun Facts:
1 – IoES scientists have projected that LA will be an average of 4-5 degrees hotter by 2050. And the Valley will have an increase in the number of extreme heat days over 95 degrees of four fold. They project more wildfires and half the amount of snow in the local mountains too. Welcome to Phoenix!
2 – IoES scientists just completed a study that mapped out how climate change is affecting disease outbreaks throughout the U.S.. The first illness they worked on was West Nile and it will become more prevalent in the southland.
3 – In a recent air quality study, unsafe levels of pollutants (particulates) were found as far as one mile from the freeway in Santa Monica during the pre-dawn and early morning hours. Maybe not the best place for your early morning run.
4 – West Africa’s environment has never been in greater jeopardy. Poaching, deforestation, climate change, mining, disease, oil, lack of sanitation, and palm oil plantations are just some of the issues. The IoES is trying to solve these problems through protecting wild places with forest elephants and Gorillas under the UN’s Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through Deforestation program. Also, they are trying to develop an education, research and training center to keep West Africa’s best and brightest environmental minds in country to protect the environment.
